Case Study: Automatic Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection Line for Medical and Precision Components

Customer Background

A manufacturer of medical and precision metal components required an automated fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI) system for inspecting surface defects on small and complex parts, including screws, intramedullary nails, and steel plates.

The customer needed a reliable inspection solution to detect surface-opening defects such as cracks and discontinuities while improving inspection efficiency and consistency.

Project Requirements

The inspection system was required to handle various component sizes and support stable fluorescent penetrant testing according to the customer’s production requirements.

Key requirements included:

  • Automatic inspection process
  • Suitable for small precision components
  • High sensitivity fluorescent defect detection
  • Stable process control
  • Reduced manual operation

Solution Provided by Newk NDT

Nuke Smart designed and manufactured a customized NKPT-500 Automatic Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection Line.

The system adopts a semi-enclosed structure with an automatic transfer system and PLC control. The complete inspection process includes:

Penetrant Application → Drip Time → Spray Cleaning → Immersion Cleaning → Drying → Developing → Fluorescent Inspection → Cleaning

The equipment is equipped with stainless steel process tanks, temperature control system, industrial control system, and automatic conveying mechanism to ensure stable and repeatable inspection performance.

Project Result

The automatic FPI line successfully improved the customer’s inspection efficiency and process consistency.

The customized solution provides:

  • Reliable detection of surface defects
  • Improved production efficiency
  • Reduced operator workload
  • Stable and repeatable inspection quality

Newk NDT continues to provide customized NDT solutions for aerospace, medical, automotive, and precision manufacturing industries worldwide.
